We are about to embark on a journey about what it means to be a worshiper in our Summer in the Psalms series. The truth is that we ALL worship something since we were created by God to be worshipers. The challenge is that there are many things out there clamoring for our affections. In this journey through the Psalms, we will be introduced to different artists and poetic genres, a mixtape so to speak, of the “greatest hits” located in the very middle of our Bibles. These poetic expressions are placed here as true-to-life models in how to posture our hearts rightly before God in the variety of situations we find ourselves in.
God allows both good and difficult circumstances to come into our lives. When we praise God for the good, offering the praise that is due to Him, that brings glory to God and encourages others to do the same. But when we think those blessings are ours to be hoarded, taking credit ourselves, He lovingly allows some disappointment and confusion into our lives that will prompt us to go to Him in desperation. While it may not feel like love at times, it is the best thing to bring peace to our souls should we choose to embrace Him. As we will be reminded, life can be a rollercoaster of emotion when living in relationship with a Living God.
My encouragement for you is that you take this journey to heart. Dare to get to know God deeper by combining what you know to be true about Him with allowing that truth to get more deeply into your heart, to the point that you cannot help but express it. That expression can range from praise and adoration to raw vulnerability and lament. The prayer of our teaching team is that this journey will enhance our worship expression not just on Sundays, but every day of the week. Don’t be surprised in the weeks ahead to see yourself grow in vulnerability not only with God, but as you encourage others in our honest walk of faith together.
